What is GEO / AEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) describe optimising your content so it is understood, surfaced and cited by AI-powered search experiences such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Bing Copilot. In practice it overlaps heavily with good SEO: accurate, well-structured, answer-ready content that AI crawlers can access and quote. The main additions are making sure key facts are self-contained and verifiable, and not blocking the AI crawlers you want to be cited by.

Does SEO still matter now that AI search exists?

Yes. AI answers are largely assembled from the same web pages that rank in traditional search, so the fundamentals — crawlability, clear structure, helpful content and authority — still decide whether you get surfaced. AI search changes how results are presented and can reduce clicks for some simple queries, but it raises the value of being one of the trusted sources an AI system chooses to cite. The safest strategy is to do SEO well and make your content answer-ready.

How long does SEO take to show results?

It depends on your starting point, competition and how much authority your site already has, but meaningful movement usually takes months rather than days. Technical fixes can be picked up quickly once re-crawled, while content and authority build compound over time. Treat SEO as an ongoing process: publish, measure in Search Console and GA4, and iterate — rather than expecting a one-time result.

What are Core Web Vitals in 2026?

Core Web Vitals are Google’s field metrics for real-user experience: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for loading, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for responsiveness, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in 2024. They are a lightweight ranking signal and, more importantly, a good proxy for a fast, stable, usable page.

Is structured data (schema markup) required to rank?

No — structured data is not a direct ranking factor, and you can rank without it. What it does is help search engines understand your content and qualify it for rich results (such as FAQs, reviews, products or breadcrumbs), which can improve visibility and click-through. Only mark up content that is genuinely present on the page, and follow Google’s structured-data guidelines to avoid manual actions.

Should I block AI crawlers like GPTBot?

That is a strategic choice. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt can protect content from being used for training or answers, but it also means you are less likely to be cited when those systems answer questions in your niche. If AI visibility is part of your goal, allow the crawlers you want to appear in and focus on being a clear, trustworthy source. If you have strong reasons to restrict use, block them deliberately and document the trade-off.
